Employee Profile: Cole Nicholls

As a home builder in Washington State, Garrette Custom Homes works hard to make all of our clients feel like a part of the family. We want to build the home that is right for you and that involves having great employees who work hard in front of the scenes and behind the scenes. Cole Nicholls may be more behind the scenes for our customers, but the job he does has a big impact on getting your home built on budget and efficiently.

Cole is a Purchasing Manager, supporting Puget Sound’s supply chain and priorities of construction. He’s been with us for a little over a month, but previously worked at Pulte Homes before joining us, so he’s certainly experienced in his field.

Crunching numbers is a big part of his job so it’s no surprise that he says his most common question at work is, “Can you get me a list of costs?” In fact, he describes his typical day as “Running comps, inspecting plans, talking to trades, strategizing products.” He’s working to make sure we have the right products, at the right prices, and are working with the best tradespeople in the industry, ensuring plans are clear and budgets aren’t being ignored.

In fact, all of that is part of what he really enjoys about his job with us. “I love using data to put together the puzzles that can equate to savings or improvement of a task. The teamwork here seems phenomenal so I’m excited to experience that more in the future.”

While he takes his work seriously, he’s got a great sense of humor to keep everyone in good spirits. When asked about winning awards, his response was, “My last couple jobs were not big on individual awards. I’ve won my share of Starbucks gift cards over the years though.” He enjoys his coffee, but isn’t such a fan of beer or eggs. Otherwise, “I’m team food. I have very few prejudices for food with the exception of some things that I’ve found don’t agree with me.”

Outside of work – and food – sports and his family play a big part in his life. Born and raised in the Bellevue/Renton area, he went to Razen High School and the University of Washington. Football is his favorite sport, but these days he’s more likely to be playing soccer or golf. Still, one of his biggest joys is coaching. “I’ve been a head coach for the Issaquah Football Club for 7+ years. I’ve coached Issaquah Little League Baseball for 3+ years. I coached long before my children were born and will probably end up coaching even after my children no longer need me to – I enjoy it because I get exercise teaching.”
