Simplify Packing for Your Next Move

If you’re just starting your search for one of the homes in Ridgefield WA, now is a good time to start getting organized for the big move. The more you can do in advance, the easier things will be when the crunch is on and you need to pack up and move.

You should immediately start going through your home and get rid of clutter. If you’re selling your home, this is a necessary step anyway to make it more appealing to buyers. You should also get rid of anything you know you don’t want to take with you. In some cases, items may need to be thrown away, while in other cases they can be sold or donated. Start doing this now so you’re not overwhelmed as you get closer to moving day.

Another reason to start streamlining your household items as soon as possible is the opportunity to see if you really do need everything. If there are items that you can’t decide if you want to keep or not, pack them up (and label the items so they’re easy to find) and if you don’t use them in the six months or so before moving, you can probably get rid of them, further reducing what is ultimately clutter.

By two months before you expect to move, you should start researching movers and getting in-person written quotes. Make sure the quote includes a US Department of Transportation number, because this certifies that the mover is registered and must follow certain safety requirements. You should also discuss insurance for items worth more than $100 per pound so you can adjust your budget accordingly.

By six weeks before moving, you should order your moving supplies. Boxes of varying sizes, bubble wrap, specialty containers for items such as dishes and glasses, and plenty of packing tape are all necessities. Be prepared that you’ll probably need more boxes than you realize and don’t forget to budget for these supplies, as they can add up quickly.

By one month before moving, you should choose a mover and make sure you have written confirmation of all of the important details, such as cost, date, insurance, etc. If you haven’t already started packing, now is the time to start, particularly with items that you won’t need to use before moving. Be sure to label boxes clearly with the relevant room and items to make unpacking easier. Aim to finish all packing by the week before you move, outside of the few small items needed up to the end. You may want to create a safe box for items such as important paperwork, jewelry and other smaller items of value that you can take yourself.
